A Bouquet of White Roses
She was crying a bucket of tears when he received his new phone.
She just broke up with her boyfriend.
It was his graduation. He graduated with honors. That's why his dad gave him a new gadget.
She kept looking at her phone, tears streaming down her cheeks, wishing and hoping that her boyfriend would call or text. Her phone did ring but it registered an unknown number.
With luck, he punched a number which actually rang. Mmmm..this could be my first text-mate if she's a girl and if she's of my age, he laughed-thought. He texted the number.
In need of someone to talk to, she replied. And found out that they were of the same age with the guy she's texting. To add, he actually made her smile. She had fun texting him. And it somehow helped her.
He had a great time texting her. There's no boring moment even in their most serious topics.
That's how Cole and Dawn's story of love started.
It all happened so fast and they realized that they've fallen in love with each other. But the thing is, they haven't met yet.
Days passed and their feelings for each other grew. Yet, they kept it to themselves, thinking that it is wrong to love someone you haven't seen yet.
Cole promised Dawn that he's going to call her on her birthday. But something bad happened. His phone got snatched. It was his only access to Dawn. Plus, he was unable to memorize her number nor wrote it down. He was thinking that it will be safe in his phone.
September 9. She waited and waited but no call from Cole came during her important day. She got disappointed but tried to understand. She tried calling him but she kept on hearing a recorded voice message on the other line saying, "The number you have dialed is either unattended or out of coverage area. Please try your call later". This went on for weeks that it came to the point that she grew tired. Again, she's crying because of a love lost. Why do I always get hurt when I love, she cried.
Five years passed and so many things have changed. He was already 21 years old when Cole returned to the Philippines from Spain. In his mind and in his heart, Dawn's still present.
Dawn, try as she might, cannot forget Cole even after two years of changing her phone number and even after they moved to a new house.
"I'm now old enough. I need to find her. She completes me. I love Dawn. I'll take the risk. I still have the name of her hometown. I need to go and see her.", he thought.
Unfortunately, Dawn was no longer there. And nobody from the neighborhood knew where her family transferred. He went home sad but still hoping.
Another 5 years passed. Dawn decided to let go of her hope to see Cole and be in contact with him again. She decided to marry her high school classmate who's faithfully courting her for years. She made up her mind of having her wedding at the town where she lived before. Her plans of a wedding with Cole would no longer be.
"Sir, I've got news. Dawn's here. And she will be---"the spy Cole contacted wanted to say the word "married" but declined knowing it would only hurt Cole. It could probably just hearsays, too. He was unable to investigate further. So, instead he said, "She will be at the church come Thursday, 10 in the morning".
"Okay. Thank you! I'll travel there as fast as I can! Thank you so much!", Cole said, happily. Finally, he will be seeing the girl who's been keeping him happy and at the same time tormenting him due to deep longing for her. He may haven't seen her yet but he's certain he truly loves her.
The day of the wedding came. White roses were decorated elegantly in the aisle. Cole was already there at 8:30 in the morning, looking all handsome and excited.
"White roses. Dawn's favorite." he thought when he saw the flowers inside the church. He remembered back when she texted him that she wishes to be married in this church with white roses as the decoration. What a coincidence!
Dawn was crying before she started to prepare for her wedding. She's still inlove with Cole but only heaven knows where he is. And she has moved on with her life, she tried to convince herself that. She's also not getting any younger. It's not that she's impatient but somehow, she's really losing hope of a love in a situation which was so vague in the first place.
The wedding started and ended well. Everybody was happy except for the beautiful bride and the guy who stood at the last pew, holding a bouquet of white roses.
As the bride passed by him, he walked towards her.
"Congratulations, Dawn. I'm happy for you", he said, with sadness.
"Thank you", she tried to cheer up knowing that she isn't really happy. "And...mmm...have we met before?" She asked realizing that the guy's face is unfamiliar but deep inside her, she knew she knows him.
The guy sighed.
"I'm Cole.", he said and handed her the bouquet of white roses.
Tears fell from Dawn's eyes as she received the flowers.
"Let's go, Dawn", her husband said and they walked away, his husband confused why she's crying.
Cole never moved from where he stood. He just stared at the couple walking away. He tried to blink back the tears that are already threatening to fall from his eyes.
Dawn gave Cole one last glance before she went out of the church's door.
It was the first and the last time they saw each other. They may not have ended together, love would always be there. Sometimes, fate would really interefere with love no matter how great.
